Rosyth Castle

Near to the Ferry terminal stands Rosyth Castle. Originally it stood on a peninsula the Castle being accessed at low tide. The tower which is the oldest part of Rosyth Castle dates back to the mid 15th century.

Mary Queen of Scots is rumoured to have stayed in the castle (yet to be confirmed). Her Coat of Arms can be seen on the wall above the North entrance.

Another rumour is Oliver Cromwell's mother was born in the Castle.

The castle belonged to the Stewarts of Rosyth.

Rosyth Doocot

Situated near Rosyth Castle this 16th century Doocot is one of the finest examples in Scotland.

Over 1000 nest boxes are still intact inside the barrel vaulted building.

Above the entrance can be seen a serpent. The roof is stone flagged with crow stepped gables. In the coroner of each skewput can be seen a fugurehead.

Rosyth Garden City

Rosyth was a rural community until the construction of the dockyard in the early 20th century. During the construction of the dockyard more than a thousand men and families were housed in tin huts. These temporary huts were commonly known as TinTown and laterly Bungalow City.

Thomas Adams, a supporter of Sir Ebeneezer Howard's idea of Garden Cities, stressed the need for low density housing with gardens, allotments, parks and preservation of woodlands. Rosyth was built and the first house occupied in May 1916.
